English 2006 Paper 1
What is you definition of beauty? Give examples of people, places or things to support you idea of beauty.
They say beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Well, it's true. Not
everyone can see things in the same way, we all have different angles from which we look at things.
Beauty is that which moves me. That is how I define it. And the way I see it, it's in everything around me. From the way the branches of trees dance in the wind, to the vehicles moving hurridly on asphalt roads, to the innocent laughter of children.
Nature is beauty in it's simplest, yet most stunning form. It's amazing really, how a scenery or landscape can bring tears to your eyes. It's all about colours and life in still, quiet moments, or in loud, exuberant juxtaposes.
It's beautiful in the way it fills us up with a sense of awe and wonder, and how much of an escape it is from real life; from highrise buildings and polluted air. Back to the basics. It is a stunning simplicity, larger than life.
You can guess by now I'm the sort of person who, if given the chance, would escape to somewhere quiet and isolated, to be surrounded by tall trees and silent moments that stretch on for what seems to be eternity.
But it's not just that. Beauty isn't just that. When looking at Nature, I indulge in that which is pleasing to the eye. but there is also music. Not just fast paced songs or the latest hit single on the charts, but also songs played solely by instruments. Notes and melodies played on the violin or piano, or the high, shrill sounds of the flute. They tell a story of their own.
Words move me, thus they are beautiful. Books and poems reciting tales that sprung from the depths of imagination in the minds of it's authors, before being set down on paper.
I tend to lose myslef in all of these; music, books, art. They are but creative means to express human emotions and experiences.
But there is also another form of beauty, one which I deem to be extremely crucial. The actions of a human being, carried out in love, sympathy or compassion. It is no easy feat to go out of one's way to make another happy, or to be patient when the other is angry.
To console, to help, to comfort, to guide, to admit defeat and to sacrifice. We put aside our pride, cast it away like the unwanted clothes on our back, just so we can help another.
A mother's sacrifice, a father's love. Contributing to charity. Emotions drive us to do things we'd normally woundn't do. Being brave even though inside we are cowering in fear. What else is beautiful, if not the act of being selfless?
That which moves me, which evokes strong feelings that would otherwise lie dormant in me, that is beauty in all it's splendour.
